S-Stock Underground trains

As part of the release of the Metropolitan Line underground route for Train Simulator Classic, our team developed the S8 and S7+1 rolling stock, which are the trains used on this line. The research for the S stock was extensive and involved multiple days of travelling on the line itself, where I gathered images, recordings, texture samples, and measurements to support development. I had the unique opportunity to ride in the driver’s cabin, where I gained valuable insights into the route, learning how signals function, how the train operates, and the speeds needed for optimal performance.

Initially, two artists, including myself, were assigned to design and develop the train. However, due to delays, communication issues, and subpar work, I personally took responsibility for the project. I reworked the entire model, as the original poly count, texture usage, and material resolution were significantly beyond the engine's capabilities, causing severe frame rate issues and bugs.

Over the course of several months, I successfully reduced the overall poly count by 75% and optimized the textures from 8k resolution to 2k, all while maintaining the quality and integrity of the model. These improvements allowed the trains to run much more efficiently, greatly enhancing the user experience.
